Significant departures are almost an inevitability in this era of college football. On the defensive line, SMU had a few due to graduation, but aside from that the Mustangs remained relatively untouched. A lot of talent is back for SMU. The duo of DeVere Levelston and Elijah Chatman emerged as difference makers a season ago. They each had double-digit tackles for loss - the only two members on the team to do so - and Levelston had a team-high 6.5 sacks. The spring also showcased a couple players who could be ready to take the next step in 2022. In January, Junior Aho - a 6-foot-4, 270-pound defensive lineman from France - posted a video of a 4.53 40-yard dash he ran. That speed translated to the final spring showcase. If there was a MVP of that game, Aho would've got it. He had multiple sacks and impressive run stops made quickly. - Dallas Morning News

SMU now has a cattle of former Longhorns. Texas wide receiver Kelvontay Dixon announced his intention to transfer to SMU on Sunday, giving the Mustangs three former Texas transfers this week. Dixon (6-foot, 182 pounds) made the announcement on his personal Instagram. On Friday, SMU added two other Texas transfers in former Mansfield Legacy defensive lineman David Abiara and former Texas defensive back Chris Adimora. On the same day, SMU also added a commitment from former Skyline and Oklahoma State linebacker Kamryn Farrar.

Earlier this offseason SMU also added a commitment from former Texas wide receiver Joshua Moore, who originally announced his intention to transfer to Texas Tech before switching to SMU. Moore isn't with the program, though, and his status as a future Mustang isn't guaranteed. SMU has been busy in the transfer portal. The Mustangs have added 14 transfers this offseason and seven this week. - Dallas Morning News

SMU added another newcomer on Wednesday, gaining a commitment from former Louisiana-Monroe safety Nick Roberts. Roberts (5-foot-11, 175 pounds) was a junior for the Warhawks last season. He had seven total tackles and an interception. Roberts was originally a three-star recruit in the Class of 2017 out of Orange Park, Florida. He signed with USF over offers from Miami (FL), Cincinnati and others. Roberts spent four seasons at USF. After redshirting his freshman season, he made an impact for the Bulls, recording 73 tackles and three interceptions. He had 63 tackles and two interceptions the following year. In 2020, Roberts played in six games and recorded 39 total tackles. - Dallas Morning News

West Virginia filled one of its needs for the 2022 football season with the addition of transfer defensive lineman Mike Lockhart. The 6-foot-4, 305-pounder could play either nose or tackle for the Mountaineers this year, and provides another depth element for a WVU defense that has been heavily rebuilt on the back end but needed one additional piece up front to give it the flexibility it had a season ago. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Lockhart played three seasons for Georgia Tech, appearing in 25 games from 2019-21 and starting seven. He recorded 28 tackles (3.5 for losses) before entering the transfer portal prior to the Yellow Jackets' spring practice this year. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

SMU will be without two of its three best receivers for the Fenway Bowl. On Thursday, a day after Reggie Roberson Jr. opted out of the bowl game, so did fellow senior Danny Gray. Both wide receivers will complete in the annual Senior Bowl before seeing what the NFL draft has in hold for them. Gray, a former Madison star who went the junior college route, had a breakout final season at SMU. In 10 games he had 49 receptions for 803 yards and nine touchdowns.
